About The Position

The Specialist, Occupational Health, and Safety (OHSS) reports directly to the Safety Management System (SMS) and Occupational Health & Safety Manager. This position will review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents, or ergonomic factors. Conduct inspections and enforce adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related field. Related experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to four (4) years.
  • Six (6) years of demonstrated experience in an industrial or environmental support role providing oversight to occupational health and safety programs.
  • Proficient experience using Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint, or similar data management software.
  • Must maintain a valid Texas driver’s license or have ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local Environmental Health Safety related regulations/compliance requirements.
  • Maintain knowledge of current and emerging issues and trends in area of regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to understand ISO certification requirements and programs.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently, self-starter, and motivator.
  • Willingness to be flexible with time and adjust to a changing work environment.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to use sound judgement and discretion in dealing with highly confidential information.

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain the Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP) and Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Administer SMS core elements: Safety Policy, Risk Management, Assurance, and Promotion.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring adherence to all safety policies.
  • Oversee service provider OSHA 300 logs and regulatory reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and public health regulations through inspections and issue resolution.
  • Lead investigations of workplace incidents to identify root causes and implement preventive actions.
  • Recommend and implement controls to mitigate risks from hazardous processes, materials, and practices.
  • Evaluate workplace conditions affecting employee health, safety, and performance.
  • Conduct inspections of facilities, equipment, and practices to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure readiness of safety equipment (e.g., fire protection, PPE, AEDs, first aid).
  • Monitor handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials and medical waste.
  • Develop and maintain industrial hygiene programs (e.g., noise, air quality, ventilation, general housekeeping.
  • Oversee hazard communication and contractor right-to-know programs.
  • Manage and administer the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program.
  • Deliver safety training, CPR instruction, and equipment-use demonstrations.
  • Lead new hire safety orientations and develop training materials.
  • Provide on-call support for safety incidents and emergencies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support safety objectives.
  • Support Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Safety Management Systems (SMS) process by ensuring staff follows safety and security policies, considers safety in every action, and ensures safety and security concerns are reported.
  • Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
