About The Position

This role is for a Specialist in the Legal Information Center department in the New York office, focusing on providing research and reference services to attorneys and staff. The position requires discretion, independent judgment, and adherence to Firm policies, aiming to meet information needs efficiently, accurately, and cost-effectively. The role emphasizes professionalism and strict confidentiality.

Requirements

  • Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an American Library Association accredited program.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of previous law library experience.
  • Prior experience working in a law firm.
  • Experience and proficiency in legal and business research.
  • Business & Competitive Intelligence research experience.
  • Strong computer skills with solid experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Knowledge of various search strategies, functionality, and navigation using a variety of Internet search engines.
  • Analytical and technical skills requiring an aptitude for detail, precision, and logic with comprehensive knowledge of Library principles and practices.
  • Experience effectively utilizing and navigating a variety of legal and business research tools, such as, but not limited to: LexisNexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg, CCH/Wolters Kluwer VitalLaw, S&P Capital I.Q., RIA Checkpoint, PACER, Factset, Pitchbook, HeinOnline.
  • Ability to keep current on new enhancements and developments relating to online legal and business research.
  • Maintain a network of information resources outside of the Firm.
  • Participate in continuing education.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to communicate effectively and in a professional manner with all levels of the Firm and outside vendors.
  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment and effectively support the demanding needs of the Firm.

Responsibilities

  • Independently, creatively, and accurately assess incoming research requests to identify the scope, complexity, and specific data required.
  • Apply critical thinking to determine the most relevant and effective questions for the reference interview to ensure accurate, relevant, and timely results within time and budget constraints.
  • Work closely with customers, practice groups, and stakeholders to ensure clarity in research objectives and expectations.
  • Perform conventional and sophisticated legal and non-legal research using various online tools (Westlaw, LexisNexis, CCH/Wolters Kluwer, Bloomberg, and practice-specific databases).
  • Provide creative and strategic solutions to unique research queries, adding value to findings.
  • Perform research related to various practice areas including corporations, securities law, banking and finance, litigation, employment/benefits, government/global trade, IP, bankruptcy, tax, environmental law, and real estate.
  • Deliver accurate, relevant, and timely research results to practice groups, Business Development & Marketing, industry teams, recruiting, and strategic committees, aligning with the firm’s strategic and business plans.
  • Evaluate and recommend new publications and research services in various formats to develop the Firm’s information resources, in conjunction with other Firm librarians.
  • Seek collaboration opportunities across administrative teams to enhance deliverables to stakeholders, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and client needs.
  • Make informed decisions on the best and most relevant research tools, staying abreast of new and emerging technologies in the legal research market.
  • Track and monitor court rulings, government publications, news outlets, and relevant legislative, regulatory, and judicial developments from local, national, and international sources (Legal Monitoring).
  • Open, sort, and distribute mail; retrieve and work with the mailroom to deliver library materials within the office and externally (e.g., interlibrary loans).
  • Assist with publication check-in and routing, invoice processing, verifying invoices against received materials, bar coding, and labeling.
  • Maintain the professional appearance of library collections, including shelving.
  • Manage the check-in process for mail and loose-leaf filing into the ILS (Softlink) in preparation for the outside loose-leaf filing service.
  • Make library claims for scheduled materials not received from vendors.
  • Work with the Legal Information Center Manager on the maintenance and currency of standing orders for library publications.
  • Update and maintain routing lists for standing orders of library publications.
  • Coordinate training and maintenance of database passwords with Lexis and Westlaw account representatives.
  • Communicate with the management team on projects and deadline issues.
  • Assist with special projects and coverage as needed in ancillary business service departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required to meet Firm goals and objectives.
