About The Position

As an Instrument Specialist III, you will join a collaborative team dedicated to advancing Instrumentation and controls infrastructure through predictive and preventative maintenance, failure analysis, and Instrumentation maintenance excellence. You’ll leverage your expertise to support critical operations, drive innovation, help shape the future of our facility.

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 1 or more years of craftsman level, Instrumentation and controls experience in the Energy industry
  • Intermediate proficiency in field instrumentation, process control systems, and troubleshooting practices in an operating plant environment

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent technical degree
  • 7 or more years of craftsman level, Instrumentation and controls experience in the Energy industry
  • Working knowledge of logic solvers, and digital and analog circuitry.
  • Working knowledge of process measurement technology (i.e. flow, pressure, temperature and analytical measurement technologies and techniques
  • Working knowledge of: Maintains a level of technical and functional knowledge with PLC logic solvers used for general purpose and safety system (SIS) applications
  • Various Instrumentation and controls technologies and hardware and how they apply to refining
  • Codes and standards and how they apply to process Instrumentation and controls in refining
  • Familiarity with documentation systems and evergreen processes for the instrument asset base, including Smart Instrumentation
  • Instrumentation and controls maintenance practices
  • ISA EC50 Safety Instrumented Systems: A Lifecycle Approach
  • Working knowledge of Safety Instrumented Systems, Safety Instrumented Functions
  • Experience with: Smart Plant Instrumentation (SPI/INtools)
  • Network communication methods between PLC’s and between PLC and control systems
  • Experience with Human Machine Interface (HMI) displays and Wonderware programming
  • Proficient in SAP, Word, Excel, Power Point and ability to present information in a graphic format
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment
  • Ability to prioritize tasks based on business need
  • Ability to transfer Instrumentation and controls knowledge in both, written and verbal forms
  • Ability to demonstrate skills required to calibrate and maintain Instrumentation and controls equipment through hands-on instruction
  • Ability to read and interpret P&ID’s, instrument drawings, wiring diagrams, and ladder logic diagrams

Responsibilities

  • Support the research, design, installation, and maintenance of advanced Instrumentation and control systems to ensure safe and efficient plant operations.
  • Analyze technical challenges, develop solutions, and contribute to engineering designs, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Create and review engineering drawings, assist with equipment installation, and monitor system performance for continuous improvement.
  • Collect and analyze operational data, troubleshoot complex issues, and apply best practices and new technologies to drive reliability and efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate Instrumentation and controls equipment information through documentation systems and processes.
  • Support the development and implementation of systems to collect failure data on the plant’s Instrumentation and controls equipment.
  • Provide hands-on technical support to the Instrumentation and Controls Reliability Group, partnering with technicians to elevate their skills and ensure high Instrumentation and controls reliability.
  • Serve as a primary technical contact for troubleshooting support to instrument technicians and operations and helps resolve instrumentation and control system issues across the plant.
  • Utilize Life Cycle Cost and Decision & Risk Analysis processes to assist with repair vs. replace decisions and infrastructure project needs.
  • Guide predictive and preventive maintenance, conduct failure analysis, and support the implementation of Instrumentation and controls safety improvement projects.
  • Collaborate across teams to support project designs, maintain accurate records, and recommend enhancements based on data-driven insights.
  • Share knowledge, mentor others, and stay current with industry trends to help shape a culture of safety, innovation, and operational excellence.
