About The Position

If so, the Specialist I - Traffic Signs & Pavement Markings position within the City's Public Works Department may be the right career for you, and we will provide paid on-the-job training! The Specialist I - Traffic Signs & Pavement Markings position is a full-time career opportunity with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $22.35 - $24.58 per hour (equivalent to $46,488 - $51,126 annually. Applicants may be considered for other levels within the department at an annual rate commensurate with qualifications. An exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED with coursework in street maintenance, construction, manufacturing, or related field and moderate (1-3 years) experience in the street maintenance, construction, or manufacturing field.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.
Valid driver's license.
Availability and willingness to participate in a non-working hours stand-by program.
Availability and willingness to participate in departmental operations during inclement weather.

Nice To Haves

Class B Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire date;
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Intermediate Work Zone Safety Certification within twelve (12) months of hire date;
International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signs & Pavement Markings Technician Level I Certification within twenty-four (24) months of hire date.

Responsibilities

Install and repair traffic signs following the guidance of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD);
Print, fabricate, and assemble traffic signs for placement in the field;
Monitor and replenish signage inventory;
Drive and operate the paint truck system, including but not limited to, loading paint and glass beads using the vacuum system, cleaning the system, and troubleshooting any issues;
Assist with lane layouts and roadway markings after new pavement is installed;
Install and repair thermoplastic road markings;
Set up and remove work zone signage in accordance with regulatory standards;
Program mobile message boards and place them along the right-of-way in accordance with MUTCD standards;
Perform snow and ice removal operations and related duties as assigned;
Operate a city vehicle in the performance of job duties;
Participate in required stand-by/on-call rotation and duties.
