About The Position

Under the supervision of the Administrator of Elementary Instruction, the specialist supports the implementation and continuous improvement of standards-based ELA curriculum, assessment, and instruction, including the Structured Literacy Approach. The specialist collaborates with central office, regional, school-site, community, and external partners to provide professional learning, instructional resources, and data-informed support that strengthens literacy instruction and improves student outcomes for all learners.

Requirements

Permanent certificated employee of the Los Angeles Unified School District
At least five (5) years of successful, full-time public-school service in a certificated position(s)
At least three (3) years of successful, full-time public-school service as an elementary teacher
A valid California Administrative Services Credential
An earned master’s degree or advanced degree of at least equivalent standard conferred by a regionally-accredited college or university
Completion of required Multicultural Education and Master Plan coursework

Nice To Haves

Experience in designing and delivering professional development using adult learning theory
Experience supporting multiple at-risk student populations such as Standard English learners, foster youth, English learners, etc.
Experience in elementary curriculum, instructional methodology, and effective research-based strategies
Knowledge of and experience with project management
Knowledge of preschool, K-6th grade California content standards English language arts, and English language development
Knowledge of Structured Literacy, Orton Gillingham and the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS)
Knowledge of restorative justice as well as social-emotional learning and competencies
Knowledge of a multi-tiered system of support and intervention to promote proficiency for all students, including those showing signs of dyslexia
CLAD/BCLAD
Familiarity with the Teaching and Learning Framework
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent computer skills and knowledge of a variety of platforms/programs (e.g., MyPLN, Schoology, MS Office, Google Drive, etc.)
Ability to work effectively with diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, disability, and socioeconomic groups
Ability to travel to multiple sites throughout the LAUSD

Responsibilities

Supports professional learning of region and central office instructional support personnel by providing content and technical support on the implementation of the California English Language Arts/English Language Development (ELA/ELD) framework and content standards
Supports curriculum design integrating core ELA curriculum and social emotional learning support for struggling readings to meet the District goals reading proficiency for all students
Supports implementation of Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), the Reading Difficulties Risk Screener (RDRS), literacy intervention, progress monitoring, and data-informed instructional decision-making for students at risk for reading difficulties
Reviews and analyzes DIBELS, SBA, and curriculum embedded assessment data to support effective District-wide implementation of ELA instructional programs and strategies to inform instruction and professional learning
Guides implementation of high-quality instructional materials and evidence-based literacy practices, including core curriculum, foundational skills, language comprehension, explicit writing instruction, student discourse, and small-group instruction
Collaborates with region and central office personnel in facilitating the implementation of standards-based literacy strategies and access strategies to support all students, including English learners, standard English learners, and struggling readers such as students showing signs of reading difficulties
Facilitates collaboration among central offices, Regions, school leaders, teachers, community partners, and external organizations to advance District literacy initiatives and strengthen systems of support
Conducts school visits, instructional walkthroughs, and follow-up coaching to monitor implementation, identify instructional needs, and provide differentiated support to school leaders and teachers
Works with site administrators, teachers, region staff, and community members to understand the California content standards, English Language Arts/English Language Development Framework, and core District programs that support the literacy success of all student subgroups
Develops instructional resources, guides, and tools to support educators, students, and families in advancing literacy outcomes
Supports the implementation of structured literacy approaches and the integration of literacy across all subject areas
