Specialist, Electrical Engineer-FPGA

L3Harris Technologies•San Diego, CA
•$92,500 - $171,500

About The Position

Help shape the future of secure RF communications by designing FPGA architectures for next-generation mission-critical communication systems. The role owns work from concept through deployment, including defining architectures, developing high-performance VHDL/Verilog, optimizing designs for speed and resource efficiency, and validating them through simulation and bench testing. The engineer partners with hardware, software, and systems teams to deliver complex mixed-signal and RF processing solutions. The position is based in San Diego, California, and follows a 9/80 schedule: employees work nine days over a 14-day period, totaling 80 hours, with every other Friday off. Travel of up to 10% may be required for stakeholder engagement and on-site integration support. The employee must be able to obtain and maintain at least a Secret clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 4 years of related experience; or a graduate degree and at least 2 years of related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, at least 8 years of related experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a minimum of a Secret-level security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 4 years of experience with VHDL, the FPGA design process, and FPGA design tools such as Xilinx Vivado, ModelSim, and Synplify.
  • At least 2 years of experience with RF principles, including filtering, mixing, and signal conversion.
  • At least 2 years of experience with DSP algorithms and their implementation on FPGAs.
  • At least 4 years of experience with debugging tools, including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and signal generators.
  • At least 2 years of experience creating technical documentation and design specifications, and delivering presentations to cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience with embedded systems and microcontroller interfacing.
  • Experience implementing cryptographic algorithms in FPGA devices.
  • Experience designing for space environments.
  • An active Top Secret or TS/SCI clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Translate system-level requirements into FPGA architectures, specifications, and work estimates.
  • Develop and optimize FPGA designs for advanced RF communication systems, including filtering, mixing, modulation, and error-correction coding.
  • Design, implement, and verify FPGA-based DSP algorithms for real-time signal processing.
  • Run simulations, perform timing closure, and integrate designs on hardware to ensure performance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate FPGA solutions into full system designs.
  • Perform code reviews, troubleshoot design issues, and refine existing architectures.
  • Produce engineering artifacts, including block diagrams, interface control documents, test procedures, and review packages.
  • Travel up to 10% to engage with stakeholders and support on-site integration activities.
