About The Position

This notice announces multiple openings for Special Staff Assignments within the 2027 Affected Area. These assignments are open to BCs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engineers, and Firefighters. The positions involve working in various locations including Station Headquarters, South King County Fire Training Consortium, and the Eastside Fire and Rescue Fire Marshals Office. All Special Staff Assignment openings are on Day Shift. Specific commitment durations are required for certain positions: Battalion Chief and Fire Inspector positions require a three (3) year commitment, while Engineer, Firefighter, and Captain positions require a two (2) year commitment. Interviews will be held from October 6 to 8, 2026, at ESFR Headquarters. The official start date for all appointments is January 1, 2027. "Shadow time" will be offered prior to the official start date. Interested members must submit a letter of interest to Human Resources via HR BAMBOO by 1700 hours on Monday, October 5th.

Requirements

  • All Battalion Chiefs shall be eligible to work Special Assignments and Special Project assignments, including those on probation at the time of assignment.
  • Members ranked as Captain, regardless of time in grade, are deemed eligible for Staff Assignments.
  • First Class Firefighters are eligible to apply for Training Engineer or Firefighter positions.
  • Members ranked as Engineer, with 12 months in grade, at time of appointment, are deemed eligible for Staff Assignments.
  • Engineers and Lieutenants with 12 months in grade at time of appointment are qualified for Special Staff Assignment.
  • Firefighters who are First Class at the time of appointment are qualified for Special Staff Assignment.
  • Captains regardless of time in grade will be deemed qualified for Special Staff Assignment.
  • The Fire Inspector position may be filled with any rank from within the bargaining unit.

Responsibilities

  • Works at Station Headquarters and reports to the Deputy Chief of Operations (BC of Operations).
  • Works at the South King County Fire Training Consortium and reports to the Consortium Training Chief (BC of Training).
  • Works at the South King County Fire Training Consortium and reports to the Consortium Training Chief (Training Captain).
  • Works at the South King County Fire Training Consortium and reports to the Consortium Training Chief (Training Engineer or Firefighter).
  • Works at the Eastside Fire and Rescue Fire Marshals Office and reports to the Fire Marshal (Fire Inspector).
