About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is a free-standing, modern facility located on the UCONN Health Center Campus in Farmington, CT. The office is a state-wide medical examiner system charged with the investigation of sudden and unexpected deaths that, by statute, fall under our jurisdiction. We are seeking one (1) part-time Special Investigator (Medical Examiner) to work in our facility located at 11 Shuttle Rd. Farmington, CT 06032. This is a second-shift, part-time position (32 hours per week) with a schedule of 4 eight-hour shifts per week, from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM, including weekend and occasional holiday coverage. Our agency operates 24/7/365, performing death investigations. The role requires a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license, potential in-state travel, physical fitness for lifting, and willingness to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases. There may be exposure to risks such as toxic vapors, broken glass, and disagreeable conditions including communicable diseases.

Requirements

Five (5) years of investigatory experience in a medicolegal investigative agency, police or military setting involving sudden and/or unexplained deaths.
Knowledge of medical terminology
Knowledge of investigatory methods and techniques
Knowledge of relevant state laws and regulations
Knowledge of relevant professional terminology
Interpersonal skills
Oral and written communication skills
Interviewing skills
Ability to utilize computer software
Possess a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
Available for in-state travel
Physically fit to perform some lifting
Willing to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases as necessary
Aware of the possible exposure/risk of injury from such elements as toxic vapors or broken glass and disagreeable conditions, including communicable infectious diseases.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, web-based systems.

Responsibilities

Visits scene of death
Reviews medical records
Conducts investigations under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner and of sudden and/or unexplained deaths
Interviews witnesses, complainants, medical and hospital personnel and others to obtain information
Secures evidence in form of statements, documents, records and exhibits which may be used in administrative hearings and/or court proceedings
Researches, collects and evaluates data
Compiles information
Writes reports and recommends appropriate corrective action
Answers public inquiries
May serve as photographer in routine cases
May prepare affidavits and applications for arrest warrants
May prepare search and seizure warrants
May issue citations
May testify at hearings and in court
May conduct surveillance
May secure samples for testing
May conduct legal research
Performs related duties as required
