CKUA is recognized as Canada’s first public broadcaster, inspiring and guiding a world-wide community of loyal arts and culture enthusiasts. It offers over 45 expertly curated multi-genre musical programs and other enriching arts and cultural content on-air and online, serving 380 communities across Alberta and reaching global listeners through various digital platforms. The Special Event & Volunteer Coordinator will be a community-minded, energetic individual helping to bring CKUA to life through events in their Edmonton rental space and at local festivals and events across Alberta. This role involves creating meaningful moments that connect people through arts and culture, from live music to donor experiences. This casual role also includes year-round opportunities to support CKUA’s building rentals and volunteer coordination for a variety of events. The coordinator contributes to CKUA’s success by planning, delivering, and supporting a variety of events and volunteer activities, working closely with the Event & Volunteer Manager and other colleagues. This dynamic, hands-on position offers the opportunity to be part of Alberta’s vibrant cultural moments, especially during the summer festival season, by coordinating behind-the-scenes and being on-site to bring CKUA’s presence to life creatively and meaningfully. The role directly contributes to promoting the CKUA brand and fulfilling its mission as a listener-supported cultural broadcaster.

Requirements

  • Experience coordinating events or volunteer programs, ideally in an arts, culture, nonprofit, or community-based setting.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to manage timelines, logistics, and stakeholder needs simultaneously.
  • Valuable experience in communication and relationship building.
  • Approach work with a high degree of respect, empathy, and professionalism.
  • Attentive to how communications impact diverse audiences.
  • Comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively across teams.
  • Passion for community connection.
  • Flexibility required for evening and weekend work, particularly during CKUA events and Alberta’s summer festival season.
  • Some travel is required, especially during the summer months for off-site events and festivals.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Better Impact or similar systems.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
  • ProServe certification (if duties include supporting events with bar service).

Responsibilities

  • Help plan, organize, and coordinate events that support CKUA’s fundraising, marketing, and donor stewardship goals.
  • Attend and support the delivery of a variety of events, ensuring smooth setup and teardown.
  • Manage logistics for events.
  • Troubleshoot issues at events.
  • Create a welcoming environment for guests, volunteers, and staff at events.
  • Provide on-the-ground guidance and support to volunteers and staff involved in event delivery.
  • Maintain accurate records of event activities and outcomes.
  • Assist with CKUA’s rentals program by coordinating building tours.
  • Support event setup for rentals.
  • Ensure the rental space is prepared for public or private use.
  • Organize and sell merchandise at events.
  • Manage the bar for in-house events (if applicable).
  • Support additional tasks as needed to contribute to the success of the program and the team.
  • Help sustain a vibrant, inclusive volunteer program.
  • Support the recruitment, screening, and placement of volunteers.
  • Build strong relationships with volunteers.
  • Provide on-site support to volunteers at both CKUA-hosted and external community events.
  • Ensure volunteer records are accurate and up-to-date using the Better Impact database.
  • Support reporting requirements in a timely and organized manner.
  • Contribute to a welcoming and meaningful experience for all volunteers.
  • Help showcase the value of community participation at CKUA.
  • Work closely with staff to ensure volunteers feel informed, appreciated, and aligned with CKUA’s mission.
