About The Position

This position provides special event support, including logistics for signage placement, setting up tables and chairs, supporting parking, marking vendor stalls, managing public and vendor access, and delivering supplies to various program stations. It also involves trash pickup, event tear-down, and clean-up. Most work occurs at Fort Steilacoom Park, but the position may also help manage storage and signage placement across the city. Under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, the role assists in scheduling, planning, and implementing recreation programs, provides administrative support, and supervises programs and special events.

Requirements

  • High school graduation and one year community-based recreation program experience.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a valid Washington State driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • First aid/CPR certification required within six months of hire.
  • Knowledge of general rules, practices, and terminology of recreational activities.
  • Knowledge of requirements for maintaining a recreational facility in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Knowledge of proper methods of setting up and storing furniture, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Knowledge of methods, equipment, and materials used in general custodial work.
  • Knowledge of oral and written communications.
  • Knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience, courtesy, and respect.
  • Knowledge of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the community's citizens.
  • Knowledge of current child development theory and practices.
  • Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a comprehensive municipal recreation program.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of recreation program development and implementation.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques of instruction.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of planning, organizing, and supervising recreation activities.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of recreation facilities, including daily operations and equipment.
  • Knowledge of record-keeping techniques.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and software.
  • Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in a community recreation program.

  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of Recreation Assistants and volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Recreation Coordinator in scheduling, planning, and implementing recreation programs in areas such as community events, specialized recreation, athletics, aquatics, after-school/summer playground programs, and general programs.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate a community recreation program for youth, including cultural arts, physical activities, and special interest classes and programs.
  • Lead groups in a variety of recreational activities, educational programs, and projects like arts and crafts, field trips, and sports; provide on-site supervision and instruction to participants.
  • Provide information to recreation program instructors and participants regarding program schedules; explain registration requirements to the general public.
  • Assist in promoting recreation activities in the community; deliver promotional materials to schools and other agencies throughout the city.
  • Assist in monitoring and evaluating recreation programs; ensure the evaluation process for recreation programs is completed.
  • Communicate with other City personnel to coordinate scheduling, facility use, and related program arrangements.
  • Maintain a variety of records and write periodic program reports.
  • Maintain program equipment in good working order; ensure facility and grounds are kept neat, clean, and litter-free.
  • Prepare recreational facilities for use; ensure appropriate equipment is available for classes and events; set up and take down tables, other furniture, and equipment.
  • Perform routine custodial work such as sweeping, mopping, cleaning hard surfaces, and wiping up spills.
  • Monitor recreational activities; ensure activities are safe and appropriate.
  • Transport program participants in a safe and efficient manner according to City policy.
  • Maintain attendance reports, activity logs, incident/accident reports, and related records.
  • May supervise part-time, seasonal, and/or volunteer recreation staff and oversee special interest instructors.
  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of staff.
  • Order program materials and supplies.
  • Operate office equipment including computers, copiers, fax machines, and telephones to perform administrative tasks.
  • Provide first aid in case of minor injury.
