About The Position

Under general supervision, organizes and guides Special Education instruction for elementary, middle, and/or high school or juvenile detention-aged students. This position is located at the Juvenile Detention Center in Prescott.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.
  • Three (3) years experience working with youth in an educational setting.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
  • Must possess valid Arizona Special Education Certificate.
  • Must possess fingerprint clearance card and the ability to work within a Secure Care facility.
  • Knowledge of a variety of specialized techniques to assess and serve individual students and their unique needs.
  • Knowledge of core subject areas for grades K-12.
  • Knowledge of working with students with varying degrees of educational functioning abilities.
  • Knowledge of business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
  • Knowledge of clerical office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of research techniques and report writing.
  • Knowledge of current Microsoft Office software.
  • Knowledge of filing and recordkeeping.
  • Skill in special education instruction.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
  • Skill in organization and adherence to detail.
  • Ability to serve as subject matter specialist for the Special Education classroom, including those required by state statutes and/or district policies and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain a cohesive school atmosphere conducive to learning and maintain adherence to classroom behavioral expectations and school rules.
  • Ability to follow and adhere to policies and procedures for the maintenance of a clean and orderly classroom, if applicable.
  • Ability to maintain a cooperative partnership with schools, agencies, detention, and probation personnel as applicable.
  • Ability to adhere to all school policies and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
  • Ability to keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
  • Ability to remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
  • Ability to act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.

Responsibilities

  • Works with special/general education students as a group or one-on-one.
  • Develops and implements plan to fulfill designated evaluation program eligibility requirements for student services as applicable in the school setting.
  • Contacts YCESA service providers as needed to comply with state and federal requirements.
  • Develops appropriate, daily lesson plans in alignment with students’ evaluation program and Arizona Academic Content Standards, including instructional techniques that allow flexibility in adapting to individual learning styles and abilities.
  • Reviews incoming student evaluation program and other related special education paperwork to verify records are current and complete; maintains records for continued validity in meeting federal requirements.
  • Revises and amends the student’s evaluation program as applicable to the school setting to include sending out meeting notices, prior written notices, parent rights, and all other applicable paperwork regarding the addendum in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Responds appropriately in a timely manner to educational inquiries made from schools, legal guardians, and other relevant agencies while adhering to confidentiality regulations.
  • Responds appropriately to inquiries made from multiple agencies responsible for the student.
  • Observes/screens students for possible special education needs and coordinates with the multi-disciplinary team to assess each referred student and creates an evaluation program if student is eligible for services.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
