About The Position

Excellence Community Schools (ECS) is seeking a passionate and student-centered Special Education Educator to support scholars in our 12:1:1 specialized classroom setting. This role is ideal for an experienced educator, teacher, or education professional committed to supporting students with diverse learning needs. NYS Special Education certification is not required for this position. ECS is a K-8 Charter Management Organization (CMO) serving communities in the Bronx, NY, and Stamford, CT, with a mission to prepare young scholars for success in top high schools through a challenging curriculum and a supportive environment that fosters intellectual, artistic, social, emotional, and ethical development. The organization emphasizes high expectations for all students and aims to develop high-level analytic and critical thinking skills.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• New York State Special Education Teacher Certification not required.

Nice To Haves

• Master's Degree preferred.
• Three or more years of teaching experience in any content area strongly preferred.
• Experience working with students with disabilities, diverse learning needs, or behavioral and/or social-emotional needs preferred.
• Experience through Teach For America (TFA) or a similar alternative certification/teacher preparation pathway is welcomed.
• Candidates who hold a NYS teaching certification in any content area are encouraged to apply.
• Candidates actively pursuing NYS teacher certification are encouraged to apply.
• Candidates who hold an out-of-state teaching certification and are pursuing NYS reciprocity are encouraged to apply.
• Experience providing small-group or individualized instruction is highly valued.

Responsibilities

• Provides individualized and small-group instruction to support students’ academic and social-emotional needs.
• Collaborates with relevant staff to identify, monitor, and support students who are considered “at-risk.”
• Partners with classroom teachers to design, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with special needs.
• Utilizes developmentally appropriate and rigorous curricula and instructional materials aligned to grade-level benchmarks and state learning expectations.
• Delivers instruction using a variety of strategies that engage students, present new concepts clearly, and encourage exploration, expression, and independent thinking.
• Modifies instructional plans as needed to meet the unique learning needs of each student.
• Administers, collects, and analyzes qualitative and quantitative assessment data to inform instruction and monitor progress.
• Builds strong relationships with families through consistent communication about the progress of at-risk and IEP students, and provides guidance on how families can support learning at home.
• Participates in school-wide assessment processes to help identify student needs and inform instruction.
• Provides teachers with resources, strategies, and recommendations to support effective intervention and differentiation in the classroom.
• Refers students for additional special services when appropriate and follows required procedures.
• Participates in IEP meetings to develop, review, and revise student plans and recommend appropriate supports.
• Maintains organized records of student progress and ensures reporting is accurate and up to date.
• Demonstrates understanding of federal and state Special Education laws and advocates for students’ rights and needs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
