About The Position

Responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and instructing such programs as remedial reading, math, language arts, as well as other programs to meet the education requirements of inmates with special learning needs. Conducts specialized classes and provides resources to coordinate educational competencies with social adjustments. Responsible for identifying, evaluating, and implementing educational systems that are evidence-based, scientific-driven, systematic instruction to effectively meet individualized student goals. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and is performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included or was supplemented by supervised student teaching.
  • At least one course in General Psychology.
  • At least one course in Human Development.
  • At least one course in History and/or philosophy of education.
  • At least one course in Teaching methods at the learning level of the position to be filled (elementary or secondary).
  • For secondary school teaching positions, at least 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of coursework in each of the principal fields of instruction.
  • At least 24 semester hours (or the equivalent) of coursework in special education, including at least one course covering the teaching of exceptional students and courses in the appropriate field(s) of specialization.
  • Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree OR a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
  • OR at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level, which has equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the position to be filled.
  • Experience in designing, developing, and implementing a variety of lessons, curricula and instructional materials based on assessment data, knowledge of teaching strategies, and learning styles for special learning needs students.
  • Experience developing, administering and analyzing a variety of individualized formal and informal diagnostic special education and literacy tests, identifying deficiencies and developing prescriptive educational programs.
  • Experience in designing a record-keeping system to evaluate special learning needs students, analyzing data presented, developing and implementing adaptations to ensure students' successful progress through course work.
  • Experience in utilizing prescriptive teaching techniques and accommodation strategies and constructing extra audio/visual aids to reinforce skills taught, and other motivational tools and approaches unique to instructing special learning needs students.
  • Combination of graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements, with graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade being combinable with experience.
