About The Position

To provide direct and consultative instructional and behavioral support to students in accordance with their Individualized Education Program. This role involves implementing special educational strategies, modifying curriculum, and collaborating with parents and professionals to ensure students' educational, physical, and social/emotional development. The teacher will maintain accurate records, establish clear learning objectives, and provide crisis intervention as needed.

Requirements

  • A valid Virginia teaching license in the area of teaching responsibility.
  • Successful student teaching or teaching experience required.
  • Knowledge of medical aspects of children with disabilities and their implication for instruction.
  • Knowledge of resources and techniques needed to integrate children with disabilities into the least restrictive environment.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to exhibit manual dexterity.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly.
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

Responsibilities

  • Complies with all School Board Policies and State Laws relative to special education or general education classroom operations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of students, including records, actions, and behaviors.
  • Employs special educational strategies and techniques to improve sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
  • Instructs students in academic subjects using various techniques to meet diverse needs.
  • Teaches socially acceptable behavior through positive behavioral support systems.
  • Modifies the general education curriculum for students with disabilities.
  • Plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time.
  • Selects appropriate diagnostic tools, understands administrative procedures, and interprets results for parents and professionals.
  • Establishes and enforces rules for behavior and procedures for a conducive learning environment.
  • Meets with parents to discuss progress and determine priorities and educational needs.
  • Confers with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop individualized education programs (IEPs).
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records and prepares reports.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates them to students.
  • Develops plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of students in inclusive settings.
  • Provides crisis intervention as needed.
  • Assists in the collection of data for appropriate classroom interventions.
  • Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Engages in continued professional development to stay up-to-date in the field of special education.
  • Maintains professional competence by participating in staff development activities and curriculum development meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising administrator.
