About The Position

The Department of Juvenile Justice is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth and strengthen families and communities across the Commonwealth. DJJ's Division of Education is seeking skilled Special Education Teachers to provide quality educational programming and services through sound instruction to meet the needs of students; will develop and ensure the provisions of the Individual Education Program (IEP) are being implemented for special education students; and will comply with standard defined under the Commonwealth’s statues and program certification requirements. The teacher will select and provide research based Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), foster a safe, respectful, and student-centered learning environment, and use student data to inform instruction, monitor progress, and promote academic success.

Requirements

  • Earned a bachelor’s degree or post graduate degree from an accredited institution and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in Special Education; or Earned a bachelor’s degree and be eligible for a Provisional (Special Education) License.
  • Must possess a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License endorsed in Special Education Gen. Curriculum K-12 or one or more areas of Special Educational Education.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Special Education teacher in a secondary setting.
  • Experience teaching at-risk youth.
  • Knowledge of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Regulations Governing Special Education Programs in Virginia.
  • Experience developing Individual Education Program (IEP) plans.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Familiar with data collection methods and implementation.
