About The Position

The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for creating and maintaining healthy relationships with students, writing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and corresponding Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). This role requires an understanding of the continuum of skills needed for community and independent living, flexibility, high motivation, and enthusiasm when working with high school learners. The teacher will also demonstrate an understanding of Professional Learning Community (PLC) elements and apply this to team situations. A commitment to differentiating instruction for all learners, including special populations, and applying the Waukee Framework for Meeting the Needs of All Students is essential. Experience with various teaching methods such as co-teaching, collaboration, whole/small group, and individualized instruction is expected. The role also involves ongoing professional growth and development aligned with Iowa Professional Development Standards and Iowa Teaching Standards, strong oral and written communication skills, serving as a WHS student advisor, maintaining accurate grades with timely feedback, and participating in secondary-level professional development.

Requirements

• Valid State of Iowa teaching license, required.
• Understands function of behavior and ability to implement behavior intervention plans.
• Successful secondary special education teaching experience.

Nice To Haves

• Instructional Strategist II (ID) endorsement, preferred.
• Previous classroom teaching experience at the 10-12th grade levels, preferred.
• Instructional Strategist I or Instructional Strategist II (BD/LD) acceptable, willingness to obtain Class B Instructional Strategist II (ID) endorsement.

Responsibilities

• Understand and experience in using multiple teaching methods: co-teaching, collaborating, whole/small group and individualized instruction.
• Commit to ongoing professional growth and development as described in the Iowa Professional Development Standards and support of the Iowa Teaching Standards.
• Articulate oral and written communications.
• Serve and meet the expectations for being a WHS student advisor.
• Maintain accurate and timely grades and provide measurable and adequate feedback on student work.
• Participate in secondary-level professional development.
