About The Position

The Special Education Teacher assesses students through standardized assessments and performance-based assessments which include interview, observation and review of pertinent data; to determine the primary achievable needs of students based on assessment and written in the IEP; to develop programs that guide and stimulate students to achieve IEP goals/objectives considering coordination of services with home and community; to monitor progress on goals/objectives routinely; and to revise goals/objectives as needed.

Requirements

  • Valid Washington State teaching certificate with endorsement in Special Education.
  • Must qualify to work in the proximity of children under the conditions of a WSP/FBI background check.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations, codes, and policies specific to students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of current general education and instructional support curriculum.
  • Knowledge of stages of child development, behavioral management, and age appropriate activities.
  • Knowledge of a range of disabilities, their impact on education and student learning, and strategies for instructional support.
  • Ability to plan, implement and evaluate effective instructional activities to meet student needs and district goals.
  • Ability to design and implement life skills instruction for students with a broad spectrum of disabilities.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective classroom management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of an educational team.
  • Ability to design and implement life skills instruction for students with a broad spectrum of disabilities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with students, parents, staff, and administrators.
  • Ability and skills to learn and use the district's technology.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs eligible special education students in content areas, as outlined in students’ IEPs; and consistent with program requirements and district curriculum goals.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials/activities, providing individualized and small group instruction to meet varied student needs.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Develops and implements, as appropriate and in collaboration the special education team, individualize student behavior plans.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
  • Evaluates and documents student performance growth on goals and content areas; keeps accurate and complete records as required by law, district, policy, and administrative regulation; prepares progress reports.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individual students involved.
  • Evaluates, selects, and requisitions books, instructional aids and supplies, conforming to policy.
  • Maintains accurate inventory records.
  • Communicates with parents, general education colleagues, and other professional staff and other professional staff members through conferences and other means to discuss individual student progress, attitude, health, and learning challenges.
  • Assumes responsibility for safe and proper use of materials, equipment, and facilities, ensuring student safety.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for instructional assistant(s) and volunteer(s), cooperatively evaluating their job performance with the building principal.
  • Creates an effective, attractive, and interesting learning environment appropriate for the grade levels served.
  • Makes provisions for availability outside the regular school day for parents and students when requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities and other professional growth opportunities.
  • Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator(s) to develop the method by which evaluation of this position will be conducted in conformity with district and State guidelines.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Administers group and/or individualized academic or content-area standardized tests in accordance with district and State guidelines; documents results; analyzes and summarizes findings; and collaboratively discusses findings with special education teams including parents.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
