About The Position

The Special Education Teacher works collaboratively with the Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and other members of the IEP team in achieving the best possible outcomes for the students served and in creating a culture of excellence within VIA Day Schools. The Special Education Teachers contributes to student programming by working in partnership with the IEP Team for IEP development and implementation, program monitoring, parent and classroom communication, and summarizing student progress for reporting purposes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, or related field required
  • Valid Virginia Special Education Teaching license (adapted curriculum K-12 or with an endorsement in a specific disability area) required
  • Valid driver’s license required

Nice To Haves

  • One year of experience in the instruction of individuals with autism using the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA) preferred

Responsibilities

  • IEP Development and Implementation: Completes IEP documents with goals/accommodations, identifies and leads educational assessments, ensures assessment timelines are met, leads Pre-IEP & IEP meetings, completes IEP Checklists, provides progress reports, and trains staff on IEP process policies and procedures.
  • Curriculum & Daily Instruction: Leads instruction, arranges classroom environment to support student needs, ensures an organized and structured classroom, incorporates VIA Tier 1 behavior support guidelines, consults with behavior analysts for strategies, develops individual and group schedules, plans and prepares for group instruction, differentiates instruction, initiates consultation for motivation/acquisition/behavioral challenges, provides one-on-one or small group specialized instruction, identifies and provides resources for curriculum scope & sequence, and coordinates with related service providers.
  • Classroom Management: Provides behavioral skills training to new instructional staff, performs proficiency checks for instructional staff, provides ongoing feedback, fosters positive staff relationships, develops and maintains daily staff rotation schedules, monitors attendance and timeliness of instructional staff, communicates and monitors classroom jobs/chores, and oversees completion of student information sheets.
  • Program Monitoring: Schedules and ensures implementation of Monthly Data Review (MDR), troubleshoots programs, leads weekly classroom meetings, organizes and schedules new hire training, develops and monitors student transitions, conducts electronic data collection system audits, and ensures IEP goals are implemented daily or at prescribed intervals.
  • Family Interactions: Communicates professionally and compassionately with families, documents communications, participates in new student admissions orientation, responds to parent communication within 24 hours, notifies parents for student illness/injury/incidents, reviews home/school communication logs, and schedules/leads parent meetings.
  • Staff Supervision: Monitors staff attendance and timeliness, delivers feedback, assists with annual performance evaluations, monitors and approves leave in Paylocity, assists RBTs with tracking supervision hours, collaborates to schedule observations/meetings for RBT supervision and training, collaborates with Staff Development & Training Coordinator for new staff training, and delivers/completes trainings for new staff.
  • Management Duties: Takes a leadership role, ensures staff adherence to policies and procedures, develops staffing and student schedules, demonstrates problem-solving and mediates conflict, provides supervision and performance feedback, conducts annual performance evaluations, provides Staff Training/Caregiver Training, assists with car & bus duty, participates in interviews, maintains classroom budget, maintains an organized work environment, assists with staff development, and implements relevant systems consistently.
