About The Position

To provide direct and consultative instructional and behavioral support to students in accordance with their Individualized Education Program. This role involves instructing students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques, teaching socially acceptable behavior, and modifying the general education curriculum for students with disabilities. The teacher will also plan and conduct activities, select appropriate diagnostic tools, establish and enforce rules for behavior, and communicate with parents and professionals to develop individualized education programs (IEPs). Maintaining accurate student records and preparing reports are also key responsibilities. The position requires ongoing professional development to stay current with educational advancements for students with disabilities.

Requirements

  • A valid Virginia teaching license in the area of teaching responsibility.
  • Successful student teaching or teaching experience required.
  • Knowledge of medical aspects of children with disabilities and the implication for instruction.
  • Knowledge of resources and techniques needed to integrate children with disabilities into the least restrictive environment.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to exhibit manual dexterity.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly.
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct and consultative instructional and behavioral support to students in accordance with their Individualized Education Program.
  • Comply with all School Board Policies and State Laws relative to special education or general education classroom operations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of students, including student records, actions, and behaviors.
  • Employ special educational strategies and techniques to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
  • Instruct students in academic subjects using a variety of techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system.
  • Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time.
  • Select appropriate diagnostic tools, be familiar with administrative procedures, and interpret results for parents and professionals.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning.
  • Meet with parents to discuss their children's progress and determine priorities and individualized educational needs.
  • Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and other professionals to develop individualized education programs (IEPs).
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate them to students.
  • Develop plans for effective communication, monitoring, and follow-up of students in inclusive classroom settings.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.
  • Assist in the collection of data for providing appropriate classroom interventions.
  • Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Engage in continued professional development to stay up to date in the development of education for students with disabilities.
  • Maintain professional competence by participating in staff development activities, curriculum development meetings, and other professional opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as the supervising administrator may assign.
