About The Position

Teaches elementary school subjects in public schools to students with neurological, mental, emotional, and/or behavior impairments. Plans curriculum and prepares lessons and other instructional material to meet individual needs of student, considering state and school requirements, physical, emotional, and educational levels of development. Confers with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and others to develop individual educational plans for students. Instructs students in all academic subjects. Creates learning materials geared to each student's ability and interest. Instructs students, using special educational strategies and techniques, to improve sensory motor and perceptional motor development, perception, memory, language, cognition, and social and emotional development. Works with students to increase motivation, provide consistent reinforcement to learning, continuous assessment of level of functioning, and continuous feedback to student for all learning activities. Works with parents to accept and develop skills in dealing with students learning abilities. May teach in self contained classroom, or teach in a resource room.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of state and school requirements for student education.
  • Ability to assess and adapt to students' physical, emotional, and educational levels of development.
  • Skills in developing individual educational plans.
  • Proficiency in instructing students in academic subjects.
  • Ability to create tailored learning materials.
  • Expertise in special educational strategies and techniques.
  • Skills in improving sensory motor and perceptional motor development, perception, memory, language, cognition, and social and emotional development.
  • Ability to foster student motivation and provide consistent reinforcement.
  • Competence in continuous assessment of student functioning.
  • Ability to provide continuous feedback to students.
  • Skills in working with parents to develop strategies for dealing with students' learning abilities.
