About The Position

The Special Education Teacher/Case Manager at Maya Angelou Academy (DoC) for the SY 26-27 will provide individualized instruction and case management services to students within a secure facility. This role involves supporting scholars enrolled in multiple courses across English/ELA, math, science, and history, including accelerated offerings. The position requires flexibility and adaptability in planning and delivering specialized instructional strategies to meet the unique needs of justice-involved students aged 18-22 with individualized education plans. The Maya Angelou Academy is an alternative school located within the Central Treatment Facility, also serving students in the Central Detention Facility, dedicated to providing educational opportunities regardless of academic history or current standing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or subject field (required)
  • Must have or be eligible for initial certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain initial certification within 1 year of employment)
  • Knowledge of IDEA and IEP development.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate multi-grade, multi-content coursework for scholars in their units.
  • Adapt and/or modify lessons to accommodate scholars' varied learning styles, abilities, and academic levels.
  • Ensure high-quality instructional materials comply with organization, facility, district, and federal education regulations.
  • Prepare reports (lesson plans, assessments, progress reports, gradebook, etc.) on time and in accordance with organizational guidelines.
  • Serve as case manager for students with IEPs.
  • Develop, review, and update IEPs in compliance with IDEA.
  • Conduct IEP meetings, reevaluations, and manifestation determinations.
  • Monitor and document student progress.
  • Ensure compliance with all timelines and documentation requirements.
  • Work closely with colleagues, leadership, and facility staff to ensure delivery of a well-rounded educational program.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss scholar progress, share strategies, and address academic and/or behavioral concerns.
  • Communicate regularly with staff about scholar needs and achievements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that maintain a safe and effective teaching and learning environment.
