About The Position

This position involves assisting students with special needs in a classroom or school environment. The role requires supporting students with personal needs, including hygiene, toileting, and clothing, as well as assisting with various challenges. The assistant must be able to follow prescribed behavioral management and instructional programs, maintain composure during stressful situations, and be physically flexible to meet student needs, which may include running, walking, lifting, and responding to physical requirements. Training in student health-related awareness and intervention is necessary. The role may involve working at multiple sites depending on student needs and may require assisting with medical tasks such as blood testing, insulin administration, suctioning, diastat, and medication dispensing. General help during "down-periods" may also be assigned. Record keeping and parent contact may be required. The ideal candidate will be child-centered, adaptable, calm, respectful, patient, and able to maintain confidentiality and focus amidst distractions. Wheelchair assistance may be required. Good attendance is essential.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Demonstrated understanding of student needs.
Ability and desire to work with special needs students.
Ability to assist student(s) with multiple challenges in the classroom/school environment.
Ability to follow through with prescribed behavioral management or instructional programs.
Ability to maintain composure and communication during stressful situations.
May need good physical flexibility such as ability to run, walk, lift and/or respond to student physical needs.
Willingness to be trained in area(s) of student health related awareness and intervention.
Willingness to accept assignment at multiple and potentially differing sites and locations depending on individual student needs as determined by the District.
Ability to work with blood testing, insulin, ports, suctioning, diastat, medication dispensing, etc.
Willingness to be assigned as general help during "down-periods".
Maintain various records and file, parent contact may be required.
