About The Position

Do you love helping kids? Did summer camp shape who you are? Skip the classroom, this summer, you'll be at a beach-side camp in Breezy Point, Queens (South of Brooklyn - 11697), supporting one of our favorite students, a fantastic 5th grader with multiple disabilities, as his dedicated 1:1 aide and tutor (SEIT/SETTS Provider). Your primary setting is an outdoor summer camp spending time around the pool, beach, sports, and camp activities. It's a meaningful, dynamic, and genuinely fun role.

Requirements

  • NYC DOE-approved Special Education Teacher or eligible for immediate approval with a valid NYS Special Education Teaching Certificate
  • Must not have been employed by the NYC DOE within the past 12 months and 1 day
  • Available Monday–Friday in July and August (approximately 25–35 hours/week; camp hours approx. 12:30–5:00 pm in Breezy Point)
  • Must be physically fit and capable of providing hands-on assistance to the student using appropriate body mechanics when needed (e.g., supporting transitions, mobility, and aquatic activities)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with students with multiple disabilities who use AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) devices
  • Exposure to students with visual and/or hearing impairments
  • Proven understanding of sensory processing support techniques and motivational behavioral modifications
  • Vision Teacher certification with a Special Education degree (bonus compensation available)

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 support for a student with multiple disabilities, visual impairments and communication challenges in a natural camp environment
  • Assist with safe transitions between camp activity spaces throughout the afternoon
  • Swim with the student during pool time
  • Collaborate with camp counselors to adapt games and sports activities
  • Deliver continued academic support during rest breaks (materials adapted for visual impairment; prep largely provided by the team)
  • Communicate and coordinate with the broader support team: vision teacher, occupational therapists, and parents
  • Gain the ability to be independent while supporting him throughout the day, while being near his family and friends with the goals of helping him continue to participate in mainstream summer fun and academics.
