About The Position

Operation Breakthrough is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that helps children who are living in poverty develop to their fullest potential by providing them a safe, loving and educational environment. Operation Breakthrough strives to support and empower children, parents, and families through advocacy, referral services and emergency aid. JOB SUMMARY The Special Education Coordinator serves as a critical link between families, schools, and service providers to support children receiving special education services. This role ensures that students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSPs) are effectively communicated, understood, and implemented while advocating for student needs and empowering families to actively participate in the educational process. This unique role serves as the main point of contact for the referral process and continued collaboration with the district after services are initiated.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of IEP processes and special education laws (IDEA preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, health and human services, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience working with parents and families navigating systems and processes in an educational or social services setting
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Experience maintaining accurate records in databases or case management systems
  • Ability to manage electronic files and maintain confidentiality in digital environments
  • Ability to manage sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism

Nice To Haves

  • Experience attending or facilitating IEP meetings
  • Background in advocacy, case management, or family support services
  • Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration within educational or health setting
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care practices
  • Bilingual abilities

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families navigating the IEP/IFSP and special education process
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for staff coordination and communication of the IEP process for identified children
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with school personnel, service providers, and families
  • Attend IEP meetings with families to provide support, clarification, and advocacy
  • Assist families in understanding their rights under special education law, including IDEA
  • Monitor student progress and ensure IEP/IFSP services and accommodations are being implemented in a timely manner and in accordance with special education laws and regulations at Operation Breakthrough
  • Facilitate communication between families and schools regarding student needs and progress
  • Support scheduling, preparation, and follow-up for IEP/IFSP meetings and evaluations
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in compliance with FERPA and organizational policies
  • Identify and address barriers to educational success, connecting families with appropriate resources
  • Assist in resolving concerns or conflicts between families and school systems
  • Collaborate with internal staff to align educational support with broader family services
