Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement a program of study that meets the individual needs of students based on their skills, abilities, and unique circumstances.
  • Provide research-based, specialized instruction to address instructional goals and objectives contained within each student’s IEP.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Develop and implement reasonable classroom rules that address behavior and procedure in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Create a weekly lesson plan describing daily learning experiences correlated with the aims and/or objectives in the curriculum guide and/or course outline.
  • Work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce concepts and skills.
  • Monitor and assess student progress to provide ongoing feedback, report quarterly progress, and report annual progress on IEP goals.
  • Maintain both paper and electronic student records.
  • Complete duties as Service Coordinator for students assigned to individual workload (to include IEP paperwork, special education assessment, quarterly progress reports, data collection, parent communication, collaboration with team members, attendance).
  • Identify and address specific student needs, and seek assistance from the site department chair.
  • Communicate using organized, clear, and precise language.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing the development of proper student behavior.
  • Use effective behavior management strategies when working with children identified with disabilities to provide interventions and develop behavior intervention plans.
  • Develop and adhere to a class schedule addressing instructional periods, breaks, and inclusive practices.
  • Create educational experiences that provide each student the opportunity to develop his/her potential.
  • Promote and follow approved school district philosophy, policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Communicate concerns and ideas with colleagues, students, parents, and the community in a positive, professional, and ethical manner.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers regarding curriculum or environmental adaptations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification, and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students identified with disabilities.
  • Assume legal responsibility for the supervision of students on school property or in attendance at school-sponsored activities.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Assume individual responsibilities which may be assigned by the principal/supervisor and which may relate to committee work, student activities, student supervision, or other planning and professional assignments.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, legible, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Attend parent conferences.
  • Participate in department and school meetings.
  • Participate in District and school initiatives.
  • Meet additional job requirements as indicated by the District or site administration.
