About The Position

This role involves working cooperatively with classroom teachers to support students with identified abilities and disabilities. The substitute teacher will assist students with regular class assignments, confer with parents and staff regarding student challenges, and help resolve psychological or behavioral issues. Responsibilities include screening, evaluating, and recommending placement for students, developing corrective programs for those with educational impairments, and providing individualized or small group instruction tailored to diagnosed student needs. The position also requires assisting students, families, and teachers in assessing abilities and setting educational goals, engaging in ongoing professional development related to learning disabilities and teaching methods, maintaining attendance and program records for reporting, and performing educational testing as necessary. Additional general responsibilities may be assigned.

Requirements

  • RIDE Elementary Special Education Certification

  • At least one year’s experience as a resource teacher preferred

Responsibilities

  • Works cooperatively with classroom teachers interpreting the abilities and disabilities of students referred from regular classes and assisting the student with regular class assignments.
  • Confers frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the educational, social and personal problems of such students.
  • Assists other professional staff members in resolving the unique psychological or behavioral problems of such students.
  • Assists in screening, evaluating, and recommending placement of students who are referred for service.
  • Develops an individual and sequential corrective program for youngsters with educational impairments.
  • Provides individualized or small group instruction according to specific needs of diagnosed students.
  • Assists the student, family and teacher in making a realistic assessment of his abilities and in establishing educational goals in keeping with these abilities.
  • Undertakes continuing professional study in the psychology of the learning disabled student in teaching methods related to this field.
  • Keeps attendance records and all records pertinent to the resource program for city and state reports.
  • Performs educational testing as needed with students.
  • Assumes other general responsibilities as may be assigned.
