About The Position

This is a part-time position for a Pre-School Special Education Teacher Aide at West Elementary. The role involves assisting students with various daily activities, supporting classroom instruction, and ensuring student safety and well-being. The hours are Monday through Thursday, from 8:20 am to 3:50 pm, with 7 paid hours and a 30-minute unpaid lunch. The position is classified as 'Classified' and reports to the Director of Student Services and the Building Principal/Designee. The salary is per a negotiated agreement, and the opening is effective immediately.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) – proof required.
  • Must hold a valid Ohio Teacher’s aide Certificate.
  • Must have ESEA qualified designation (State Parapro Assessment) or two years of higher education; associate’s degree or higher.
  • Respect confidentiality of personal information and classroom behavior of students with anyone outside relevant professional staff and the classroom.
  • Be aware of classroom procedures regarding token reinforcement system.
  • Be aware of classroom procedures regarding positive verbals.
  • Be aware of classroom procedures regarding guidance without giving answers.
  • Be aware of classroom procedures regarding communication with parents.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with handicapped students preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Take students off the bus in the morning and bring them to the classroom.
  • Assist in preparing students for school (book bags, lunches, coats, folders, etc.).
  • Fill out attendance records.
  • Assist students to classes individually or as a class.
  • Accompany students to individual classes (music, art, gym, computer, swimming).
  • Keep students on task and in their seats during classroom instruction.
  • Continue lessons as planned if the teacher is called out of the room.
  • Assist students in learning centers and provide positive instructions and directions during individual seat work.
  • Supervise students during activity periods.
  • Assist students to the restroom individually, help with clothing, washing hands, changing diapers, and personal hygiene.
  • Lift students to assist when necessary, including lifting for toileting needs.
  • Accompany students to the lunchroom and assist with eating when necessary.
  • Monitor students during time after lunch if needed.
  • Provide discipline throughout the day, in and outside of the classroom, using positive but firm correction of behavior and reinforcement to encourage improvement.
  • Encourage independence throughout daily activities with each student to their own individual ability.
  • Respect confidentiality of personal information.
  • Perform any additional duties assigned by the teacher and principal/designee.
  • Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
  • By example, instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
  • Chaperone field trips.
  • Make school-related telephone calls for the teacher.
  • Administer first aid to children as necessary.
  • Perform correspondence, including reports and other required correspondence.
  • Supervise general housekeeping duties.
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher, office staff, Principal/designee, or Director of Student Services.
