About The Position

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to provide one-on-one support to a student with special needs at Bedford Middle School. The ideal candidate will assist in creating a positive and inclusive learning environment, helping the student to achieve academic and personal goals. This part-time position requires a commitment to fostering the student’s independence and confidence while collaborating with teachers and other staff members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience working with children, particularly those with special needs, is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting students with diverse learning needs.
  • Ability to follow directives and work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Basic proficiency in using technology and educational tools to support learning.
  • Must pass background checks and any required training or certifications related to special education.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized support to the assigned student during classroom activities, ensuring their engagement and participation.
  • Assist the student with academic tasks, including reading, writing, and math, adapting materials and teaching methods to meet their specific needs.
  • Implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and track progress towards goals, reporting any significant changes or concerns to the supervising teacher.
  • Foster a positive and respectful relationship with the student, promoting social skills and appropriate behaviors in various school settings.
  • Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and parents to share insights and strategies that support the student’s learning and development.
  • Assist with the use of adaptive technologies and tools to enhance the student’s learning experience.
  • Supervise the student during transitions between classes, lunch, and other activities, ensuring their safety and well-being.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge related to special education.
