About The Position

This position assists in meeting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. The aide will support the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instructional activities, working under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

Requirements

Associate’s degree or two years of study at an institution of higher learning OR met formal academic assessment as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
Valid Texas educational aide certificate.
Ability to work with children with disabilities.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Knowledge of general office equipment.
Some experience working with children.

Responsibilities

Help prepare instructional materials and classroom displays.
Maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
Help keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
Assist students with physical disabilities, including transfers, lifting, positioning, and personal care (feeding, bathroom needs, personal hygiene).
Help manage student behavior, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous students as needed.
Recognize and adapt to individual student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises.
Supervise students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom (lunchroom, bus, playground duty).
Keep the teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
Maintain confidentiality.
Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
