About The Position

The position serves as a 1-to-1 in the Distinct service pathway, supporting special needs students in various classroom settings. The role involves assisting with daily care, implementing educational plans, monitoring student behavior, and collaborating with staff and parents. Responsibilities can vary based on specific student needs, such as generalist, severe/profound, behavior disorder, hearing impaired, or autism support.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
At least one of the following: (a) Have received a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment as published by PESB; or (b) Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university; or (c) Have earned seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher at an accredited college or university; or (d) Have completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios.
Ability to read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others.
Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices.
Knowledge of age-appropriate student activities.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Knowledge of conflict resolution.

Responsibilities

Accompany student to and from school via district-provided transportation.
Accompany student to general education classroom.
Support with toileting duties.
Perform tube feeding (training will be provided).
Administer emergency seizure medicine.
Collaborate with parents/guardians in support of the student.
Work with teacher and other staff members in the classroom.
Physically support student with stairs and other aspects of moving around the school building.
Assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students.
Assist in implementing plans for instruction.
Monitor student behavior during non-classroom time.
Provide information to appropriate school personnel.
Attend IEP meetings.
Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials for special education students.
Administer a variety of materials and assignments to assist in evaluating student progress.
Administer first aid and medical assistance as required.
Assist students requiring support in addressing personal care needs.
Attend meetings and in-service presentations.
Confer with teachers on a regular basis to assist in evaluating student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
Confer with teachers and/or parents regarding student progress.
Direct and implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders.
Instruct students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings.
Maintain instructional materials and/or student files/records.
Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
