About The Position

This position is assigned to the focus service pathway at Green Lake Elementary. The Special Education Assistant assists in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in regular or self-contained classrooms. This role involves assisting in the implementation of instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, providing information to school personnel, and attending IEP meetings. Duties may vary based on school or program needs, such as generalist, severe/profound, behavior disorder, hearing impaired, or autism.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
At least one of the following: a qualifying score on the Education Testing Service paraeducator assessment, an associate degree or higher, seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the one hundred level or higher, or completion of an apprenticeship as a paraeducator.
Valid State of Washington Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Ability to perform basic math, including calculations with fractions, percents, and ratios.
Ability to read manuals, write documents, and present information.
Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices.
Knowledge of age-appropriate student activities.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.

Responsibilities

Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the teacher to ensure all special education students can participate.
Administers a variety of materials and assignments (e.g., tests, homework, grades papers, folders) to assist the teacher in evaluating student progress and organizing individual needs.
Administers first aid and medical assistance as required.
Assists students with personal care needs due to medical conditions or physical limitations.
Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) for information acquisition and conveyance.
Confers regularly with teachers (special education and mainstream) to assist in evaluating student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
Confers with teachers and/or parents via phone calls, emails, or meetings to provide information on student progress as per their IEP.
Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions to meet needs, ensure safety, and provide a consistent environment.
Instructs students in individual and group settings on academic subjects, social skills, and daily living skills to reinforce instructional objectives and support IEP goals.
Maintains instructional materials and student files/records, including adapting materials and tracking attendance.
Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments (restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, etc.) to provide assistance and ensure a safe learning environment.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
