Assist a special education teacher in meeting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. The position supports a Structured Learning Class (SLC), an instructional environment for children with autism and/or other communication disorders who need support developing functional language, communication, and behavioral skills. Instruction emphasizes these needs beginning at the preschool level, with increased academic and functional-routine support at the elementary and middle school levels. The classroom is highly structured and uses positive behavior supports and instructional strategies aligned with Applied Behavior Analysis. Students may join activities with nondisabled peers, with support as appropriate, to generalize skills learned in the SLC classroom. SLC classrooms provide opportunities for intensive specialized instruction at students’ prerequisite academic TEKS levels. The aide supports instructional activities, student behavior, personal care, and physical needs, including assistance for students with physical disabilities. The role also includes working with students individually or in small groups, supervising students throughout the school day, supporting IEPs, maintaining records and confidentiality, and participating in assigned training and events. The position reports to the Campus Principal and has a 186-day work year.
