About The Position

The Special Education Aide helps meet the physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities so they can gain full benefits from the district’s special education program. The aide works under the general supervision of the principal and the direction of the classroom teacher. Daily attendance and punctuality are essential. No supervisory responsibilities are assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED and an ESSA or NCLB Certificate, or an associate degree or 48 college hours from an accredited college.
• Satisfactory outcome of a fingerprinting check.
• Ability to work with children with disabilities.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

• Two years of experience working successfully with children.

Responsibilities

• Help meet students’ individual needs, including transferring students to and from wheelchairs, lifting and positioning them, and signing or interpreting instructions.
• Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
• Help manage assigned students’ behavior, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous behavior as needed using crisis prevention intervention techniques.
• Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
• Work with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
• Assist assigned students throughout the school day inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duties.
• Keep the teacher informed about special needs or problems of assigned students.
• Participate in professional development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
