About The Position

Help meet the physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside the classroom. Assist with implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), including self-help, behavior management, and instructional programs. The role works under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of the certified teacher.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED certificate.
• Meet formal academic assessment requirements, have an associate’s degree, or have completed two years of study at an institution of higher learning.
• Valid Texas educational aide certificate.
• Ability to work with children with disabilities.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Knowledge of general office equipment.
• Some experience working with children.

Responsibilities

• Help meet students’ individual needs, including transferring them to and from wheelchairs; lifting and positioning them; interpreting instructions; and assisting with feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
• Help manage assigned students’ behavior, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous students as needed.
• Recognize students’ special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs and adapt methods and interactions accordingly.
• Work with assigned students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
• Assist assigned students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
• Keep teachers informed about special needs or problems of assigned students.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Participate in professional development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
• Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
