About The Position

Supports the teacher and students to ensure the best possible learning experience for the special education children in a safe and secure environment while maintaining confidentiality. This role involves assisting students with academic tasks, behavior management, and personal needs under the supervision of a teacher.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience working with children.
• Initial Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI) (6hrs) prior to initial in-person CPI training, 3 hours of CPI training via modules through MISD.
• Annual CPI training (2-3 hours).
• Good communication skills.
• Adaptability to learn.
• Patience and flexibility.
• Ability to adapt to a variety of teaching skills.
• Ability to handle and relate to emotional and physical challenges.
• Ability to be caring, understanding, patient and friendly towards students.
• Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and classroom situations.
• Ability to physically manage student behaviors and equipment.

• Ability and willingness to complete any necessary training required to successfully perform job responsibilities.
• Ability to follow through with outlined behavioral management plan or instruction programs.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English to perform essential job duties, including understanding and following safety instructions, responding appropriately to emergency situations, completing documentation, and interacting with English-speaking staff, students, community and supervisors.
• Ability to take direction and feedback from school staff member.

Responsibilities

• Assist one-on-one, small groups or classroom with students under the supervision of the teacher as directed.
• Assist teacher with completing academic tasks.
• Engage students with instructional activities developed by the teacher (reading, writing, math, spelling, life skills, etc.).
• Manage student behavior by implementing Positive Behavior Support Plan (PBSP), IEP accommodations, and behavior management strategies.
• Monitor, intervene, and redirect student behaviors, and act to prevent and deescalate student behavior.
• Assist student(s) with personal needs, including hygiene, diapering, toileting, and clothing.
• Collect data related to behavior, academics, and instruction.
• Participate in professional development and attend CPI training.
• Communicate with community, staff, and students to answer questions and disseminate information.
