About The Position

Supports the teacher and students to ensure the best possible learning experience for the special education children in a safe and secure environment while maintaining confidentiality. This role involves assisting students with academic tasks, managing behavior, supporting personal needs, and collecting data under the supervision of a teacher.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Initial Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI)(6hrs) Prior to initial in-person CPI training, 3 hours of CPI training via modules through MISD
• Annual CPI training (2-3 hours)
• Experience working with children, required.

Responsibilities

• Assist one-on-one, small groups or classroom with students under the supervision of the teacher as directed.
• Assist teacher with completing academic tasks.
• Assist in engaging students with instructional activities developed by the teacher i.e. reading, writing, math, spelling, and life skills, etc.
• Assists in managing student behavior by properly implementing Positive Behavior Support Plan (PBSP), IEP accommodations. And behavior management strategies.
• Provides support in monitoring, intervening, and redirecting student behaviors.
• Acts to prevent and deescalate student behavior.
• Assist student(s) with personal needs, including but not limited to hygiene, diapering, toileting and clothing.
• Assist in data collection related to behavior, academics, instruction, etc.
• Participate in professional development and attend CPI training.
• Communicate with community, staff, and students to answer questions, disseminate or explain information.
• Assist with movement of students with special needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring and physical intervention).
• May obtain food from the cafeteria, serves food, and feeds student or helps them feed themselves.
• May facilitate students' use of mobility equipment such as leg braces, walkers, mobile standers and tricycles, etc.
• Assist Special Education students on and off buses.
• May be required to assist students on field trips.
