Special Assets Associate

Stifel•New York, NY

About The Position

The Special Assets Associate supports the Special Assets Team at Stifel Bank in underwriting, monitoring, and resolving criticized, classified, and other heightened-risk commercial credit relationships. Applying completed credit training and prior credit experience, the Associate prepares financial and credit analyses, drafts credit memoranda and recommendations, and supports workout strategies, risk ratings, and portfolio reporting under senior team review and oversight. The role involves taking ownership of assigned analytical workstreams, identifying risks and information gaps, and coordinating with borrowers and internal partners as directed. Supported relationships may include venture-backed and sponsor-supported companies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, accounting, or another business-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
  • At least 2 years of relevant commercial banking, credit underwriting, credit analysis, or portfolio-management experience.
  • Completion of formal commercial credit training or an equivalent structured credit-training program.
  • Solid understanding of financial statements, accounting fundamentals, commercial credit underwriting, cash flow, liquidity, leverage, collateral, and repayment sources.
  • Ability to apply credit training to develop supported analyses and preliminary credit recommendations, rather than solely compiling information.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft clear credit memoranda and explain analytical conclusions.
  • Sound judgment and attention to detail, including the ability to reconcile source information, identify risks and gaps, and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, take ownership of analytical workstreams, and incorporate feedback.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal partners.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook, including financial modeling, scenario analysis, and data reconciliation.
  • Ability to learn and effectively use loan accounting, credit underwriting, portfolio monitoring, risk-rating, covenant tracking, document-management, and reporting systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience preparing commercial credit memoranda and financial models.
  • Exposure to special assets, distressed credits, venture-backed or sponsor-supported borrowers, or technology and life-sciences business models.
  • Familiarity with distressed-credit monitoring, commercial loan documentation, workout concepts, venture debt, or sponsor-supported lending; advanced legal or workout expertise is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare financial-statement spreads and borrower, guarantor, liquidity, cash-flow, leverage, collateral, and repayment analyses for assigned relationships.
  • Draft credit memoranda, periodic reviews, risk-rating recommendations, situation updates, and approval materials for amendments, extensions, forbearances, and restructurings, subject to review.
  • Develop and update cash-flow, cash-runway, and recovery models; evaluate assumptions and downside scenarios; identify credit risks; and present findings and preliminary recommendations.
  • Review borrower reporting, borrowing-base information, compliance certificates, covenant compliance, payment performance, and collateral data; identify discrepancies, reporting gaps, and early warning indicators and promptly escalate concerns.
  • Prepare supporting calculations and documentation for nonaccrual, charge-off, specific reserve, and loss-forecast analyses for senior review.
  • Maintain accurate credit files, portfolio data, reporting schedules, and action-plan trackers and follow up on outstanding items.
  • Support approved amendments, waivers, forbearances, restructurings, settlements, and other resolution activities by preparing analyses, coordinating documentation, and tracking conditions and deliverables, with oversight.
  • Coordinate routine information requests with borrowers, relationship teams, credit, loan operations, legal, and finance with direction.
  • Conduct industry, company, market, and transaction research.
  • Take ownership of assigned underwriting and analytical workstreams, incorporate review feedback, and ensure work is accurate, well-supported, and timely.
