About The Position

The Division of Child and Family Well-Being (DCFW) at NC DHHS focuses on supporting the health and well-being of children and families in North Carolina. The North Carolina Early Intervention Section (NCEI), part of DCFW, leads the N.C. Infant-Toddler Program (ITP), which provides services for children birth to three with special needs. Children's Developmental Services Agencies (CDSAs) work with local providers to support these families. The CDSA Interpreter provides interpreter and translation services for individuals seeking services from the CDSA Program of Mecklenburg County Public Health. This role assists the public with paperwork and forms and coordinates related services.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of related experience
  • Fluency in English and interpreting skills in Spanish
  • Associate's degree in a related field
  • Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted
  • Must be able to pass County’s certification exam
  • If assignment is in the Health department, must be able to successfully complete testing for medical interpreting in both Spanish and English
  • Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
  • Requires County Driving Privileges
  • Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check
  • Proficient in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite

Responsibilities

  • Interprets and translates initial requests, both on the phone and in person, for assistance, and provides communication for non-translating staff and the public.
  • Schedules appointments, answers questions, and coordinates additional services or requests.
  • Translates written materials and forms such as brochures, educational information, and directions and assists with forms completion when requested.
  • Accompanies staff on field/virtual visits which may include staff representing county departments in planning, administration, child protective services, medical providers, or workforce initiatives.
  • Gathers materials for clients which will assist them in meeting their objectives or in obtaining assistance.
  • Maintains information, data, or other materials on clients as necessary.
  • Coordinates and performs a variety of administrative duties to support the department and staff.
  • Some positions may be required to support enrollment and eligibility activities performed in the NC FAST system.
  • May be required to staff shelters in the event of a disaster.
  • Respond in cases of urgent and/or emergent events that require public health interventions. Employees may be trained for and assigned duties unrelated to their regular work; work outside normal work locations, business hours and workdays may be required. Emergency events include, but are not limited to, pandemics, severe weather situations (e.g. snow or ice storms, tornados, hurricanes), natural disasters (e.g. earthquakes), fire, or power outages, and acts of terrorism.
