About The Position

TriVector Services, Inc. is seeking an SLS Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) Engineer to provide Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) expertise to Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in support of the Space Launch System GNC team. The role involves developing and analyzing guidance algorithms, sensor models, simulations, and vehicle-level performance to support SLS requirements, verification, validation, and mission objectives. The engineer will communicate analysis and design results and support technical meetings and integration activities across SLS elements. The position requires onsite work at Marshall Space Flight Center and may require occasional travel of less than 10%.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • A B.S. in engineering, preferably aerospace engineering, with at least 8 years of experience, or an M.S. with at least 5 years of experience.
  • Experience developing GNC or conducting flight mechanics analysis for launch vehicles, spacecraft, missiles, or similar vehicles.
  • Experience implementing and optimizing navigation algorithms, including Kalman filtering and inertial navigation.
  • Knowledge of fault-tolerant navigation systems and designing navigation systems that continue operating despite sensor or system failures.
  • Expertise applying cascading filters to combine multiple sensor data streams.
  • Strong familiarity with astrodynamic reference coordinate frames, including Earth-centered, body-centered, inertial, and non-inertial frames.
  • Deep understanding of frame-transformation quaternion mathematics.
  • Solid background in orbital mechanics, dynamics, Kalman filtering, state estimation, control theory, and/or optimization.
  • Experience configuring, executing, and analyzing high-fidelity 3- and 6-DOF simulations to verify mission requirements, validate sensor model implementation, and/or perform trade studies.
  • Familiarity with Monte Carlo methodology and statistical analysis.
  • Mid-to-high proficiency in C++, MATLAB, and/or Python.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work onsite at Marshall Space Flight Center.
  • Occasional travel of less than 10% may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and test guidance algorithms, incorporating GNC models into simulations and SLS flight software.
  • Develop and review technical reports, presentations, and formal documentation on guidance performance analyses and model development.
  • Derive, develop, and analyze sensor models, including inertial measurement units and rate gyro assemblies, in a high-fidelity simulation environment.
  • Conduct trades and sensitivity analyses involving vehicle system and subsystem configuration changes, implementations, and interactions with GNC subsystems.
  • Implement mitigations for flight software change requests and discrepancy report items as requested by the SLS Guidance Team Lead.
  • Evaluate integrated vehicle system response to guidance design changes to verify and validate vehicle requirements and mission objectives.
  • Conduct Monte Carlo dispersion analyses to assess vehicle and GNC system performance.
  • Conduct guidance subsystem performance analyses to support requirement specification development and compliance.
  • Communicate design and analysis results internally and externally to the Guidance Team.
  • Support technical meetings, working groups, milestone reviews, and task teams involving integration and analysis with other SLS elements.
  • Support related areas in the SLS Vehicle Management discipline as requested by the VM DLE.
  • Assist with trajectory/GN&C analysis, production, and delivery as required by the VM DLE.
  • Develop models, configure and analyze MAVERIC simulations, and produce Monte Carlo results as requested by the VM DLE.
