About The Position

ProPublica is seeking a driven reporter to cover compelling stories grounded in the Southwest with national resonance. The role involves producing investigative journalism that is compelling, revelatory, and aims to bring about change. The reporter will join a team focusing on Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah, with an interest in issues affecting federally registered tribes and state government accountability, particularly in Arizona or Utah. The position requires a strong track record of investigative reporting, proficiency in various reporting techniques including data analysis and creative engagement, and the ability to conduct both quick investigations and longer-term projects. Collaboration is key, as the role involves working closely with colleagues within the team, across the newsroom, and with external organizations. Travel may be required for assignments, training, and staff meetings.

Requirements

  • At least a five-year track record of producing investigative stories, ideally in the Southwest.
  • A vision for covering the Southwest region and its diverse communities.
  • Experience with a wide range of reporting techniques, including exclusive data analyses and creative strategies.
  • Ability to bring an accountability lens to issues through both quick investigations and longer projects.
  • Strong collaborative skills and experience working with others.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • Pitches for covering issues affecting members of the region’s many federally registered tribes.
  • Pitches for reporting on state government accountability, particularly in Arizona or Utah.

Responsibilities

  • Produce investigative stories with a focus on the Southwest region and its diverse communities.
  • Pursue accountability stories that are both important and powerfully told.
  • Utilize a wide range of reporting techniques, including exclusive data analyses and creative strategies for reader and source engagement.
  • Conduct quick investigations (a couple of weeks) and longer projects (months or more).
  • Collaborate effectively within the team, across the newsroom, and with regional and national news organizations.
  • Travel as needed for assignments, training, and staff meetings.
