About The Position

ProPublica is seeking a driven reporter to cover compelling stories grounded in the Southwest with national resonance. The role involves producing investigative journalism that is compelling, revelatory, and aims to bring about change. The reporter will join a team focusing on Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah, with a particular interest in issues affecting federally registered tribes and state government accountability, especially in Arizona or Utah. The position requires a strong track record in investigative reporting, a vision for covering the region's diverse communities, and a passion for pursuing accountability stories. The role emphasizes a wide range of reporting techniques, including data analysis and creative reader engagement. The reporter will work on both quick investigations and longer-term projects, collaborating extensively within the team, across the newsroom, and with external organizations. Travel may be required for assignments, training, and staff meetings.

Requirements

  • At least a five-year track record of producing investigative stories, ideally in the Southwest.
  • A vision for how they’d cover this region and its diverse communities.
  • Relishes pursuing accountability stories that are both important and powerfully told.
  • Embraces, and has experience with, a wide range of reporting techniques, from underpinning stories with exclusive data analyses to using creative strategies to engage with readers and sources.
  • Brings an accountability lens to issues of the day through both quick investigations reported over a couple of weeks and longer projects that take a few months (or more) to land.
  • Really likes working with others.
  • Can travel, as needed, for assignments, training and staff meetings.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate within the team, across the newsroom, and with other news organizations regionally and nationally.
  • Travel, as needed, for assignments, training and staff meetings.
