About The Position

Interstate Waste Services (IWS) is seeking a Line Sorter for their Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) / Optical Sorting Facility. The Line Sorter plays a crucial role in identifying and removing wrongly recycled products from the waste and recycling stream, ensuring environmental integrity. This position involves learning to identify appropriate recyclable products as they move through optical sorting machinery.

Requirements

  • Must meet physical standards including standing for four hours at a time, working in hot and cold weather, sorting on a moving conveyor belt, light shoveling, occasional lifting (less than 50lbs), and familiarity with hand tools like pliers.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must be a team-player attitude as job is spent in close quarters with other staff members that all rely on one another.
  • Sorters will spend their shift standing on their feet alongside the conveyer belts.
  • Will be exposed to odors, hot or cold weather, as well as physically touching items in the recycling stream.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience from the sanitation industry is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Sort and pick through refuse at the MRF / Optical Sorting Facility.
  • Identify and remove wrongly recycled products from the waste and recycling stream.
  • Learn to identify appropriate products throughout the optical sorting machinery.
  • Stand for four hours at a time (based on shift and break rotations).
  • Work in hot and cold weather conditions as the work area is not heated or cooled.
  • Sort through recyclables on a moving conveyor belt.
  • Perform sweeping during cleanup time.
  • Perform light shoveling.
  • Perform occasional lifting (less than 50lbs).
  • Use hand tools like pliers for the cleaning of baled product.
