About The Position

The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Cardiology is looking to hire one position, either a Sonographer (Pay Grade 5) or a Sr. Sonographer (Pay Grade 7), depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. This role involves performing complex ultrasound procedures at an advanced level, requiring independent judgment and initiative to obtain diagnostic information for physicians. The position also includes participating in the teaching, evaluation, and advising of cardiology fellows, residents, and medical students within the Pediatric Graphics Laboratory.

Requirements

Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program (i.e. Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing, etc.) plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography or CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology, or Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography (for Sonographer role).
Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers within nine (9) months following the start of employment in the specialty area of Pediatric Cardiac Echocardiography (for Sonographer role).
Demonstrated understanding of cardiac physiology.
Willingness to travel to outreach clinics throughout the state of Iowa.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
A Bachelor's degree in Radiation Sciences or other Allied Health Sciences discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (for Senior Sonographer role).
CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology, or Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography (for Senior Sonographer role).
Extensive (3-5 years) progressively responsible experience in diagnostic medical sonography, diagnostic cardiac sonography, or vascular sonography (for Senior Sonographer role).
Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or other nationally recognized accreditation organizations for primary specialty (for Senior Sonographer role).
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Experience providing clinical education to students and sonographers and residents (for Senior Sonographer role).

Nice To Haves

Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare or science related field (for Sonographer role).
Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the specialty area of Fetal Echocardiography. Not a requirement during application.
Experience in performing fetal echocardiograms.
Experience in performing pediatric echocardiograms.
A Bachelor's degree in Radiation Sciences is highly desirable (for Senior Sonographer role).
Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the specialty area of Fetal Echocardiography. Not a requirement during application.
Experience in performing fetal echocardiograms.
Experience in performing pediatric echocardiograms.

Responsibilities

Perform and analyze pediatric cardiac ultrasonography studies including M-mode, 2D, Color Doppler, 3D echocardiograms and fetal echocardiograms.
Provide and maintain quality diagnostic ultrasound scans as accepted by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC).
Effectively apply knowledge base of complex congenital heart lesions to echocardiographic imaging of patients from neonates, older children and adults, and fetal echocardiograms.
Responsible for performing 3D echo studies of complex pediatric cardiac abnormalities.
Responsible for delicate and careful handling of imaging sessions with very premature infants and critically ill children, including patients with imaging challenges – such as uncooperative or active children.
Participate in tele-echo services.
Determine equipment malfunctions and report to appropriate person.
Perform equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation.
Obtains and documents a comprehensive medical, psychosocial, and developmental health history; performs and documents complete, system-focused, or symptom-specific physical examination, assessment, and plan of care.
In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute, and complex care of patients and manages patient's overall care, initiates appropriate referrals and consultations, and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
Orders, performs, interprets, and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques, relevant supporting diagnostic information and diagnostic procedures where indicated.
Forms differential diagnoses and treats acute and chronic conditions.
Prescribes therapeutic interventions both pharmacologic, non-pharmacologic and surgical/procedural, needed to achieve expected outcomes.
Utilizes evidence-based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
Provides specialty specific consultation services upon request and within specialty scope of practice.
Facilitates the patient’s transition between and within health care settings, such as admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
