About The Position

BackOps is seeking a Solutions Engineer to manage the technical relationship with customers throughout the entire lifecycle, from initial technical discussions to post-go-live. This role involves partnering with Account Executives, leading technical demos and Proofs of Concept (POCs), authoring Statements of Work (SOWs), configuring and deploying solutions, and collaborating with the Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team when necessary. The Solutions Engineer will act as the primary technical point of contact, ensuring customer success by translating business problems into deployable architectures and identifying potential issues before they arise. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, analytical skills, and a consultative approach to drive successful customer outcomes and contribute to product development through feedback.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years in a technical pre- or post-sales role (Solutions Engineer, Sales Engineer, Implementation Manager, Technical Account Manager, or Forward Deployed Strategist).
  • Experience in both scoping deals and delivering them.
  • Hyper-observant and analytical with the ability to read between the lines and identify edge cases.
  • Strong technical research skills, including diving into API documentation for unfamiliar applications.
  • Hands-on technical skills such as using Postman, cURL, reading documentation, writing pseudo-code, and building working POCs against real data.
  • Proven project and resource management experience, including owning multi-stakeholder implementation projects end-to-end.
  • Ability to manage the bandwidth of technical teams and push back or reprioritize when necessary.
  • Strong prioritization skills based on impact (ARR, strategic value, severity).
  • Excellent demo and presentation skills, including tailoring demos and defending architecture.
  • High emotional intelligence, with the ability to deliver bad news wrapped in a plan.
  • Commercial awareness, understanding the financial impact of technical decisions.
  • A strong sense of ownership and responsibility for outcomes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a Forward Deployed Engineering model (e.g., Palantir, Scale AI, C3 AI, or similar high-touch enterprise SaaS).
  • Experience in logistics, supply chain, freight, 3PL, or adjacent operations technology.
  • Hands-on experience with integration platforms, iPaaS tools, or workflow automation (Workato, Tray, n8n, Zapier, custom middleware).
  • Background in AI / agentic product deployment.
  • Experience transitioning between pre-sales and delivery roles.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Account Executives on qualified opportunities to translate customer operational problems into BackOps solution architectures.
  • Conduct discovery and perform forensic workflow analysis to identify gaps, edge cases, and hidden dependencies in customer workflows.
  • Lead technical demos, tailoring them to specific customer workflows and addressing technical objections in real-time.
  • Scope and execute POCs, defining success criteria jointly with the customer and building working configurations against real data.
  • Translate ambiguous customer requirements into technical realities, researching niche tools, investigating APIs, and proposing solutions.
  • Author implementation plans, SOWs, and capabilities/deliverables documents, identifying integration points, risks, and dependencies.
  • Configure, integrate, and deploy solutions, owning the project plan, timeline, and cutover to drive time-to-value (TTV).
  • Manage stakeholders, both internal and external, through the go-live process.
  • Act as the gatekeeper for the Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team, determining when novel builds require FDE involvement.
  • Lead high-stakes scoping sessions, SOW reviews, and integration design conversations, communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Perform joint health snapshots with Customer Success Managers (CSMs) for warm account handoffs.
  • Provide feedback on reusable patterns and recurring gaps to Product and Engineering teams.
