About The Position

Peregrine Advisors is hiring a full-time, remote Solutions and Lakehouse Architect to help design and build the Azure Databricks lakehouse that supports a federal agency’s data products, reporting, and machine learning. The role will initially own defined components of the target lakehouse architecture and guide their implementation within the program’s established architecture. As assignments and company needs evolve, the architect may take on new systems, responsibilities, and contributions to the firm’s capabilities, tools, and lines of business. Work may include designing lakehouse components and medallion layers; implementing and extending Unity Catalog governance; building dimensional and Data Vault models; connecting external sources through Lakehouse Federation; and serving analysts through Databricks SQL and Power BI. The architect documents decisions and reference patterns, reviews implementations against them, and makes design tradeoffs clear so the agency can govern and extend its components. This is a remote W-2 position with an annual salary of $120,000–$140,000. The initial engagement requires U.S. citizenship; dual citizens and green card holders are prohibited by the contract terms. The candidate must also be able to satisfy required suitability, security, and access requirements.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of data architecture, data engineering, or analytics engineering experience, including design work on a production data platform.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Hands-on Azure Databricks experience, including Delta Lake and medallion architecture.
  • Experience with Unity Catalog data governance, including access control, lineage, and data classification.
  • Experience modeling data for analytics, including dimensional modeling; Data Vault is a plus.
  • Advanced SQL and working knowledge of Python, including PySpark.
  • Experience serving analysts and reporting tools, for example through Databricks SQL and Power BI.
  • Ability to write decision records, standards, and diagrams that engineers and reviewers can follow.
  • Delivery experience in a federal government environment, working within its security, access, and review processes.
  • Proficiency in writing, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • U.S. citizenship; dual citizenship and green card holders are prohibited by the contract terms.
  • Ability to satisfy the required suitability, security, and access requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience on a federal system accredited at Impact Level 5 (IL-5) or higher.
  • Data architecture experience in Microsoft Azure and at least one additional cloud platform, such as AWS or Google Cloud.

  • Databricks certification or a Microsoft Azure architecture or data certification.
  • Federal data governance experience, including records, privacy, and security controls.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted developer tooling.
  • Data Vault modeling experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design components of the agency’s Azure Databricks lakehouse, including medallion layers and Delta Lake storage.
  • Implement and extend the Unity Catalog governance model, including catalogs, schemas, access controls, lineage, and required data classifications.
  • Build analytics data models, using dimensional modeling and Data Vault where appropriate.
  • Connect external data sources through Lakehouse Federation and provide access for analysts through Databricks SQL and Power BI.
  • Document design decisions and reference patterns for owned components, and review implementation against them.
  • Make architecture tradeoffs explicit and create reusable patterns that help the team govern and extend its solutions.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools as appropriate to implement, test, and improve owned components, while reviewing and remaining accountable for their output.
  • Work within an established architecture and improve it as the program evolves.
