About The Position

This position performs manual labor in the collection of solid waste and operates solid waste collection equipment. This is the journey level position in the maintenance worker job series requiring some technical knowledge. Positions in this class perform a variety of operational and maintenance activities and other duties related to the residential and commercial collection of solid waste. Work is performed within established procedures with individual judgment limited to proper handling of, and minor changes to, accepted routine. Although the position may operate independently, supervision or guidance is readily available, and the incumbents’ work is frequently reviewed.

Requirements

Three years’ experience performing a variety of the essential duties of the position.
High school diploma or GED.
Must possess a Washington State Driver’s License and a Class B Commercial Driver’s License by date of hire.
Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date: first aid and CPR certifications confined space training

Nice To Haves

Prior experience operating a large truck in congested traffic conditions and welding preferred.

Responsibilities

Collects all solid waste on assigned route, including driving vehicle or serving as assistant, and disposes of it at an authorized site.
Cleans, disinfects, and deodorizes refuse trucks.
Maintains all containers on assigned route, including repairing and painting damaged containers.
Performs routine truck maintenance.
Responds to citizen complaints regarding collection service and provides advice on the proper packing of refuse.
Maintains route books.
Handles hazardous materials, such as battery acid, paints, and other types of chemical refuse.
Operates assigned equipment, makes minor field repairs and adjustments; reports need for major repair to supervisor/lead.
Responds to customer inquiries and requests.
May be assigned to other divisions performing work requiring similar skills during times of peak work loads, manpower shortage, public emergency, or other times when critical work needs to be completed.
