About The Position

To coordinate and implement specific solid waste collection activity; to supervise either commercial or residential refuse collection activities; and to assist in solid waste program development. Receives direction from the Solid Waste Superintendent. Exercises direct supervision over solid waste collection personnel.

Requirements

Knowledge of methods, procedures, and practices of solid waste collection.
Knowledge of City streets and thoroughfares.
Knowledge of effective procedures and techniques of routing, scheduling, and work management.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures related to solid waste collection and transportation.
Knowledge of machinery, equipment, and supplies necessary for operation of a municipal solid waste program.
Ability to plan, schedule, and coordinate refuse collection routes.
Ability to assist in the selection, supervision, training, and evaluation of staff.
Ability to assist in the preparation and administration of a budget.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to operate a personal computer, calculator, and two-way radio.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.
Possession of a valid Texas Class A CDL.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year, a High School Diploma or GED.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year, a Class C Solid Waste Management Certification.

Responsibilities

Organize and schedule refuse collection activities such as commercial solid waste removal, residential collection, and container repair and maintenance.
Assist in planning new collection routes and revising existing routes to meet workload demands and provide efficient service.
Assist in the selection, training, and evaluation of staff.
Manage inventory of plastic garbage bags.
Monitor the condition and maintenance of solid waste collection vehicles including mechanical compactors and lifting mechanisms.
Order necessary equipment and supplies.
Supervise employee training and safety programs.
Maintain records and develop reports concerning program effectiveness and efficiency.
Assist in preparation and administration of Solid Waste Division budget.
Perform related duties as assigned.
