About The Position

Under close supervision, maintains the cleanliness of the communities of the Tohono O'odham Nation by collecting and sorting refuse, cleaning up dumpsites and other areas according to established departmental codes, regulations, policies and procedures. The work is normally reviewed in progress and upon completion of each assignment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; most aspects of the work tasks are covered by detailed instructions or procedures.

Requirements

Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
Knowledge of common hand and power tools.
Knowledge of basic grounds and landscaping maintenance practices and procedures.
Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
Skill in performing manual labor.
Skill in following oral and written instructions.
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in verbal or written format.
Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma
Six months work experience as a laborer.

Nice To Haves

Possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
Meeting the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
Fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English.

Responsibilities

Collects refuse items and recycle materials such as lumber, paper, rags, containers, chemicals, and scrap metal in barrels or other containers.
Removes garbage and trash using various hand tools such as pitchforks, rakes, shovels, or hoes.
Inspects materials and refuse; sorts items into a pile; places in bins or barrels according to type, size, conditions, coloring, marking, or other distinguishing characteristics in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Salvages reusable materials to production department or storage.
Separates metal parts from waste.
Attaches labels to waste and salvage containers to identify contents.
Makes minor repairs to scrap and trash containers such as removing dents, replacing lids, painting over graffiti, and other minor repairs.
Assists in unloading and cleaning garbage and pick-up trucks; assists drivers as needed.
Picks up litter around bins, at project work sites and other locations.
Observes all safety precautions to prevent injury or damage to self, others, or equipment.
Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.
