About The Position

The City of Mesa is recruiting for Solid Waste Equipment Operator I/II positions. The Solid Waste Equipment Operator I is an entry-level role responsible for the safe, economical, and efficient operation of light-to-heavy solid waste equipment, involved in the collection, transportation, or disposal of refuse and recyclables. This role requires limited to moderate skills in equipment manipulation and may involve public contact, prolonged physical exertion, and working in hazardous conditions under all weather. The Solid Waste Equipment Operator II is a journey-level classification responsible for the safe, efficient operation and care of moderately complex heavy solid waste equipment, including front loaders, automated side loaders, and roll-offs. This role also involves collection, transportation, and disposal of refuse and recyclables, requiring considerable skill and coordination. Both roles require adherence to safety guidelines, use of appropriate personal protective equipment, and may involve assisting in maintenance and repair activities when not operating equipment. The Solid Waste Equipment Operator I may progress to Solid Waste Equipment Operator II upon meeting specific criteria.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Valid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no air brake restrictions and valid medical examiner’s certificate (for Operator I - Collections Assignment).
  • Valid Arizona Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no air brake restriction and valid medical examiner’s certificate, and meet qualifications to wear a tight-fitting respirator (for Operator I - Support Services Assignment).
  • Subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) drug and alcohol testing.
  • Good (1-3 years) experience operating light trucks, construction equipment, and/or manual labor/maintenance tasks (for Operator I).
  • Three years full-time employment operating heavy vehicles and/or construction equipment (for Operator II).
  • One year of full-time employment with the City of Mesa as a Solid Waste Equipment Operator I within the Solid Waste Department may be substituted for three years of full-time employment operating heavy vehicles/construction equipment (for Operator II).
  • Must possess a valid Arizona Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no air brake restriction and valid medical examiner’s certificate (for Operator II).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing heavy manual labor tasks and welding (for Operator I).
  • Experience operating a bin truck, bin truck with trailer, or rear loader (for Operator I).
  • Experience operating solid waste equipment such as front loader, automated side loader, roll-off, or rear loader (for Operator II).

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of light-to-heavy solid waste equipment safely, economically, and efficiently.
  • Perform tasks involved in the collection, transportation, or disposal of refuse and recyclables.
  • Assist in manual and technical aspects of construction, maintenance, and repair activities when not operating equipment.
  • Interact with the public, potentially involving public contact.
  • Work in close proximity to heavy traffic and overhead utility lines.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and regulations, including personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Operate designated heavy refuse equipment such as front loader, automated side loader, and roll-off (for Operator II).
  • Use defensive driving techniques in accordance with policy, procedure, and training guidelines.
  • Understand collection schedules and accurately read and follow route maps/lists.
  • Interact with customers with respect and integrity.
  • Perform related work as required.
