About The Position

Operates large and complex specialized equipment used in the Public Works Division, and performs related work as required. Drives and operates large or heavy equipment in Public Works, and other equipment that requires the use of a commercial driver’s license. May operate smaller and less complex equipment as necessary. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment. Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment. Adjusts equipment as needed for specialized operation requiring a high degree of accuracy. Maintains simple records of equipment operation. May lead a crew in routine daily operations and instruct subordinate equipment operators in various equipment operations. The employee may refer to city maps to locate work sites. Generally, work assignments are in the form of simple oral instructions. Judgment and decision-making are limited to determining the technique or method of action in completing a particular task. The supervisor is consulted when existing guidelines do not adequately cover a situation. The employee performs a limited to moderate number of tasks using some judgment and decision-making to determine the course of action or techniques to use. Instructions to the employee are broad and uncomplicated. The employee may lead the work activities of a crew of utility workers or equipment operators. In that capacity, he/she may demonstrate or instruct subordinates in basic tasks; he/she is also responsible for assigning work. The employee would also be responsible for the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of subordinate’s work. The employee usually receives oral instructions but may occasionally receive written instructions or directions. Methods of accomplishing assignments are usually at the discretion of the employee. Deadlines and priorities are determined by the supervisor. The employee’s work progress, accuracy, and completeness are monitored regularly. Most contacts are with fellow employees and supervisors, although the employee may have incidental contact with the general public while working at job sites. The employee’s contact with the general public involves giving out routine factual information or responding to routine inquiries. Will be required to work in emergency situations after hours. Must maintain and wear personal protective equipment at work zones. Ability to maintain consistent attendance.

Requirements

  • Must have high school diploma/GED
  • Must have a valid commercial operator’s license at the time of placement (CDL A or B)
  • Must have driving record sufficient for coverage by City’s auto liability coverage.
  • Completion of a minimum of one (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of light equipment or trucks and six (6) months experience operating the equipment required by the position or any combination of education and experience leading to a comparable level of knowledge and skill.
  • Good knowledge of geographic layout of the City.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics, methods, techniques, procedures and maintenance of machines and equipment operated.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees and lead the work of subordinates.
  • Ability and skill in the operation and use of heavy equipment.
  • Ability and sufficient skill in writing to complete simple records.
  • Ability to climb ladders, kneel, stoop, bend, twist, crawl, see, talk, hear, read, write, walk, push, pull, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment and material.
  • Ability to work indoors, underground, outdoors, in confined spaces, in trenches, on level, slippery, sloping, unstable and muddy terrain, and under constantly noisy conditions.
  • Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather and hazardous conditions including mechanical, electrical, fumes, odors, dust/mist, chemicals and exposure to insects.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directives.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and stress.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to deal effectively and efficiently, in a pleasant manner, with the general public, employees and with distraught and irate citizens.
  • Ability to work extensive hours after 5:00 pm as well as weekend work.
